| To all:
A Christmas Carol, while not a perfect retelling of the Dickens classic, is a pretty good movie that doesn't do the story any major injustices, and in fact brings a fittingly dark tone to most of the passages that need it. I was pleasantly surprised. Gary Oldman, true to form, was fearsomely perfect for all three of his roles.
To my two most consistent readers:
I have completed work on my short film "The Firing Squad." It will show here on campus on Tuesday, but I'm going to put it up somewhere sometime Monday (say, by four o'clock my time) for you to get a sneak preview. Check your emails sometime tomorrow afternoon.

| So, is everybody as busy as I am, or do I just keep logging on at the wrong times?
I've actually watched three new movies in as many days - aren't you proud of me?
Close Encounters of the Third Kind: ***1/2 While Spielberg does manage to make the slightly-too-long runtime a compelling watch, this feels like one of his lesser movies to me. I can tell it's the work of a great storyteller, but I can also tell that it's the work of a young storyteller. I would say that the movies surrounding it in his career are noticeably better. Still... Spielberg.
Tombstone: **** Jam-packed with recognizable faces, witty one-liners, and a crackling pace. I definitely liked it - and Val Kilmer's performance is only made more awesome by the fact that it was based on somebody who actually lived.
American Beauty: ***1/2 That's a tentative rating, but I bet it's where I'll stay. The movie plays with some interesting technical ideas, but fails to really go anywhere special (in my opinion). It ultimately just feels a little flat, which is a problem I've had with all the Sam Mendes movies I've seen.
I also picked up Up and Heat today, so I'm pretty excited about that.
How is everybody? It feels like it's been a while. | | |
| I don't understand anything that happens in these five minutes. | | |
| So, for those of you wondering how my Halloween week turned out - most holidays are more like seasons, to me - look no further.
Movie rundown:
Batman Begins It's been a while since I've seen this, and now I'm wondering why. A cool, cool movie grounded on standout performances by Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman. The more I see of Bale, the more I'm impressed with him. I had also forgotten how seedy and stylish Gotham looks in this movie - it's the one thing I wish had carried over to The Dark Knight. ****
The Terminator Again, I catch myself wondering why I haven't seen this in as long as I have. The first of Cameron's two true sci-fi classics (the sequel being the other) is a powerfully driving beast of a low-budget thriller. Plus it's always nice to see Michael Biehn. ****
The Orphanage Despite how often I promote this movie, for some reason it's hard to get people to actually watch it. Finally, I had success with one of my roommates, and it was a good watch for me, too - though not as needed, because I've seen it this year already. It's gorgeous, haunting, and has that one scene towards the end that is absolute perfection. ****
Ghostbusters Funny movie. The only thing that detracts from it, in my opinion, are some slight pacing problems here and there. Nothing to really take away from its status, though. ***1/2
Drag Me to Hell A fun little flick, though not one I have a strong urge to see again. It got a little too out there, a little too incoherent, for my tastes. Some of the parts in the middle didn't have the impact I felt they should have had (most notably the seance). Still, a strong beginning and ending means I didn't waste my time with it. ***
Them! Though displaying all the classic elements of 50s sci-fi, this killer movie about killer ants nevertheless displays all the classic elements of 50s sci-fi. Recommended. ***
---------------
Other than that, I've been a bit strained over the past week or so. My workload has snuck up on me, plus I'm sort of without a support structure at the moment. I'll deal, though.
There was a birthday/costume party going down Saturday night, so I went as a Man in Black. You heard it here first. The party was a success, due to there being a different crowd than the usual. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it's an improvement.
My short film is coming along. I'm still not sure how it's coming along, but it is. Maybe another five days or so? We'll see. | | |
| At approximately 3:00 p.m. this afternoon officers from the Department of Public
Safety responded to a call of a shoplifting from the Campus Book Store. Employees
of the Book Store were attempting to stop the shoplifter when he exited the University
Center and attempted to flee in a vehicle. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle when
the driver intentionally drove at one of the officers striking him with the front of the
vehicle and throwing him on the hood of the car. As the car fled the scene the officer
was thrown to the ground and sustained injuries to his leg. In an attempt to stop
the violator the officer fired at the vehicle striking the tire. One suspect who was a
passenger in the vehicle fled the vehicle and was apprehended by our officers. The vehicle
fled campus and was found by Homewood P.D. a short distance west of the campus
on Lakeshore Drive. The officer has been transported to the hospital for examination.
Investigation continues by this office and the Homewood Police Dept.
